From Realization to Conversation: What Happened After I Saw the Video by Beth Green

 “How America’s Hero-Worship Has Been Destroying Us”

Last week, I shared a video that opened my eyes to something which had been percolating in my brain for years. I saw how deeply damaging the hero’s journey had shaped my thinking — not just in storytelling, but in how I understood myself, my relationships, and my place in the world.

That realization didn’t stay quiet for long. I got to work processing how to reframe the hero’s journey to a framework that supports community and relationships. We don’t have to be alone in our life’s journey. 

From this investigation into storytelling I shared my findings with Beth and she invited me to speak with her on the following week’s show. Initially I hesitated because I was not confident I could do the interview. After a few email conversations with Beth I realized that she was supporting me as part of the larger community. This was exactly where I was going with storytelling. This was the perfect opportunity to live in community and relational storytelling in the real world.

During the show, our conversation became a kind of turning point: a chance to say out loud what had been shifting inside me, and to explore what it means to move away from hero‑centric thinking and toward a more relational, community focused way of understanding storytelling and living.

The interview felt like the next step in this unfolding, so I’m sharing it here as part of the same thread. If the first video was the spark, this conversation is the moment the spark met real life.
